Our Story

In the fall of 2004, a string of wonderful coincidences came together and gave rise to Johnson County’s gem of a shopping destination – Serendipity Accents. After ten months, the little shop by the courthouse moved to a beautiful, stately home next door.

The new home, restored with the same exacting attention to historical detail as the previous home, exudes warm elegance. Come visit our columned wrap-around porch, wonderful large gardens, welcoming foyer, and three floors of delightful discoveries. Serendipity Accents offers unique home décor, furniture, and lighting for every taste, from elegant to shabby chic. In addition, we've added fabulous new gourmet food items, and we can’t wait to share our newest bath and body items. Visiting Serendipity Accents is a chance to be delightfully surprised at every turn – an endless universe of soul charming treasures awaits you. In our never-ending quest to find the things that will delight you, our store naturally changes from week to week, and our frequent repeat customers have found they always find something new in store. That means it’s the kind of place where you should plan to spend some time.

We’ve been amazed by how warmly we’ve been accepted by the community, and have heard again and again how our Olathe neighbors would like to see the original downtown area become a vibrant destination. As gas prices have soared, we’ve heard countless guests say they long to have an historic, charming area to visit, shop in, and even have a bite of lunch – but that didn’t involve an hour long drive. We believe old town Olathe can be just that place – it’s a perfect “small town” hidden in the heart of busy, modern Johnson County. Although we’re located in the original heart of one of the fastest growing cities in America, the majority of our customers come from outside Olathe. In fact, we have many repeat customers from as far away as Texas! This kind of attraction is good for Olathe, and we’d like to see more of it. We share the city’s vision for downtown redevelopment, and are taking steps to help make it real. Our existing location will still be wonderfully decorated, but we’re laying it out to immediately become a full-time location for private parties, receptions, showers, and catered events. Imagine a little girl’s tea party, complete with dress-up clothes, invitations, and no mess for Mom or Dad - we’ll have it at Serendipity! Full line catering and event planning services will be available. And we’re also busily working to establish a walk-in lunch, tea, and coffee shop. We believe this will help create that “nearby destination” that so many people crave. Serendipity Accents is a beautifully restored 1920’s home in the historic downtown Olathe courthouse area. It’s open to shoppers, decorators, organizations, and clubs throughout the area Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 – 5. The shop offers a unique “at home” feel, giving shoppers a chance to see how its many items can be arranged in your own home. The owners’ spirit of hospitality extends beyond business hours – many private, nonprofit, and social groups have held special fund raising events at the shop, and the owners are committed to giving a portion of their profits back to the community that has welcomed them so warmly.
